Unexpected Greenery

Keep small succulents planted in a teacup to line a table indoors. They add a pretty design element that is easy to care for, and succulents can be planted outdoors once they get too big.

Jars of Green

Fill mason jars of various sizes with greenery and water (greenery stays alive longer than flowers when placed into water). Snip off the branches and place in jars along a windowsill or mantel piece.

Creating a Terrarium

Recreate the feeling of being more alive that comes with spending time in nature by adding a beautiful, lush terrarium to your home. Terrariums are easy to maintain and the green plants and chic container will add new energy and style to your space.

Supplies List:

Terrarium plants that thrive in similar environments. Cacti and succulents do best in high-light environments while ferns and ivy do better in higher humidity, filtered light environments.

Glass planting container, which can be a simple open glass bowl or apothecary jar or a more decorative container from a home or garden store. (NOTE: choose your container based on the type of plants you wish to grow in your terrarium. Sun-loving plants like succulents do best in open terrariums since closed/covered terrariums placed in direct sunlight reach high temperatures that will kill your plants. Ferns and other plants that thrive with indirect light and higher humidity can be placed in either open or closed containers.)

Soil – either regular potting soil or cactus/succulent soil depending on the type of plants you’re using

Small pebbles

Activated charcoal or carbon pieces (available at pet shops) – optional for open terrariums but necessary for closed terrariums to keep the soil fresh

Preserved moss

A few decorative rocks

Animal figurine (optional)

The first step in creating your terrarium is to form a drainage layer. Begin by filling your container with a layer of at least 1” of small pebbles followed by a layer of activated charcoal/carbon, which keeps the soil fresh.

Add a thin layer of soil and then place your plants in your terrarium starting with the largest ones first. Once your plants are positioned as you like, add soil around them, pressing it down to help hold your plants in place.

Add preserved moss and some decorative pebbles on top of the soil. Lightly water your newly planted terrarium.

And to make your terrarium a little more fun and unique, a miniature animal figurine is a great addition.

To maintain an open terrarium, mist it with a spray bottle about once a week. Closed terrariums rarely if ever need additional watering. If excess moisture ever accumulates in your closed terrarium, open it and let it air out for several hours. You're sure to enjoy the refreshing feel of the outdoors that your beautiful new terrarium brings to your home!
